Kaden is back
I loved the Kaden character from the first book so was eager to see what Lasica would do with her next. Strong female character and a mix of femme-power, conspiracy and high-tech in a well-woven story. Good read.

It was a lot of fun reading this book. (No spoilers here.) Lasica builds on the themes of clandestine out-of-control mentally-whacked rich guys using technology to further their goals of world domination; deep state, undercover, off-the-books government spooks; a heroic orphan who was adopted and then betrayed by a relative; kidnapped young women on a dead-end trip bound for disaster; and a heroine who survives victoriously, yet is shadowed by doubts that threaten to take her down. The tech in the story is well thought out and leaves you wondering how close we are to some of this. And wondering whether you should cancel that scheduled visit to The Big Theme Park next month. Written in that mystery style where there are several threads going on all the time, coming together late in the story in a satisfying chase scene with twists and turns, and a climactic denoument at the end. This story places well up there among the thrillers, mysteries and sci-fi I've read in the last couple of years!

This is a bit over-the-top in places, but overall, a gripping, white-knuckle thriller. There's a heroine - Kaden Baker - who has the necessary background skills in martial arts and weaponry - and an AI avatar designed as Amelia Earhart. That comes in handy for the times when Kaden gets to the point where All Seems Lost. There's an insufferably evil Villain, who's hatched a plot to destroy civilization and Rule the World. The Villain and his henchmen - all top billionaires with plenty of power to match - are up against a rag-tag band of independent nerds with major technical chops.
At times, the plot borders on the ridiculous, but Lasica holds it all together. At times, the writing starts to fray, as in "It was smack in the middle of....", but those are few and far between. The descriptions of action and mayhem are well paced.
The two major concepts - the Island, and the method used to destroy civilization, are plausible enough, though the thing that connects them is just a bit hard to take.
Overall, though, I found this to be a good read. I haven't read book 1 (Biohack), but this second book continues Kaden's story from the first book. There's enough information given in this one that you can figure out Kaden's past, and not lose anything by starting here.
I look forward to reading that one. So far, there's no Book 3 - but this one ends with yet another cliff-hanger that suggests Kaden might just have some more work to do.

    J. D. Lasica’s Catch and Kill turned out to be just the book to pass time in a hospital waiting room! What I thought would be tedious waiting was soon ramped up to my full-speed turning pages—the story line so gripped me! The next thing in technology has always intrigued me and I discovered in the first book in the series, Biohack, that J. D. Lasica has a handle on the anticipation of the future use of technology; in this case, virtual reality. As an ethicist I also appreciate the moral dilemmas and situations new technology challenges us to solve—mysteries of their own right! I was also pleased to reacquaint myself with the main character, heroine Kaden Baker, from the previous book. She was an engaging character there and even more so in Catch and Kill as she emerges the victor through various twists and turns in the narrative, yet we are pulled into her story so that we share her doubts and energy to reconcile all that has happened. As in the great thrillers, we continue to walk the mental tightrope even after the climax. I’m sure this is not the last we will hear of Kaden Baker and perhaps her next sci-fi thriller will involve artificial intelligence—at least I hope so!

Getting past editing and continuity errors is tough for me (and there were quite a few), but I am not one to put a book aside before finishing it. The author has definitely met women before but should stick to writing from a male character's perspective as his "female" protagonist (who keeps repeating that they don't like pronouns but doesn't do anything about it) falls short of a fully-rounded character. The future tech is interesting and the action scenes engaging.

The storyline moves along at a fast pace. Being a technophobe I'm not sure how much of the hi-tech is actually possible, but it does bring home the power and dangers of technology. Lots of twists and turns make this an enjoyable read.

I read this book when the author had it priced at zero. I am glad to be able to read this sequel to Biohack, apparently no matter what you may have read elsewhere.

This is definitely a sequel. Having read and reviewed BioHack (available on Kindle Unlimited), I know a bit about what's going on. I really think reading the first book is necessary to really understand what's going on.

Jaden is back, along with her fellow hackers from B Collective. There are a few newcomers in the mix. Most notably Amelia, the best hacker of all.

After a botched kidnapping attempt during which Kaden suffered a life-changing loss, B Collective wondered if it was related to The Disappearance. One day in America when girls, ages 16 to 19 disappeared off the streets, or in several instances, by being forced into a van. No one really knows how many girls Disappeared. There's a good reason B Collective wondered.

Jaden is on the chase for the man who ruined her life. She is so focused on chasing him, she pays no attention. Until all of a sudden her chasing has turned into a two pronged attack.

People she trusts turn traitor, people she doesn't know have shocking news, and she goes off a cliff - twice.

The thing that struck me right from the start of this entertaining action thriller is the plausibility of the technology involved. The wondrous gadgets the villains deploy are easy to imagine being available in the very near future. That all adds to the tension of the story and what a story it is. We have kidnapped girls, larger than life super rich super villains, secret organisations and heroes that are more than just brawn. This is a story with an awful lot going on, which would take far too long to recount here, and it’s all very entertaining. There’s plenty of action to go with the ambitious story about a world changing conspiracy. It’s very well written and the story moves along nicely before switching gears when the action hits. I really enjoyed it and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone that enjoys books about secret agents, shady organisations and conspiracies.

Deep down Catch and Kill is a fast-paced, international thriller winding readers through foreign places, barreling them away just as quickly to keep up with the main character to her next challenge. As the story unwinds, the risks multiply both on a personal and story level, pitting Kaden and her tech-savvy crew against a megalomaniac with world-domination plans.

While concocting a tight-knit story, Lasica's knowledgeable intermingling of technology sets the novel apart. Human smuggling, Wi-Fi drones, gene manipulation, mind control, the author presents a smorgasbord of high-tech concepts and gadgets to choose from. Though resounding with riveting ideas, the book remains grounded in a present-day news aura.

Lasica presents a compelling and frightening look at gene-enhancement technology in a frightening and highly readable way. What a Netflix TV series this would make. Highly recommended.

From the first page on, the writing was extremely exciting. A great conspiracy of international crime syndicates who want to divide the world among themselves. And a team of hackers/special forces that want to prevent this.
Strong women play a big role in the two books - I liked both books with Kaden very much.

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly written thriller for Imbeciles
Reviewed in Germany on August 25, 2019
    Format: KindleVerified Purchase
I bought this so called "thriller" based on reviews. The hero of the thriller is someone called Kaden, an "operative" with unclear affiliations.
The book begins with some bad guys trying to abduct her at a major party in her honor. This somehow sets the mood - imagine you were a bad guy. Would you abduct here before the event?, After the event? Or during the very large and crowded event where she is the guest of honor? Strangely, the bad guys attempt it during the event. Unsuccessfully though, but her boyfriend Gabriel gets killed. This does not really leave an emotional imprint of her, even though the author tries to imprint on the reader that she is emotionally shaken. Here one nugget of the writing still which is just to cringe - inducing not to quote: "But for Kaden, a distant thunder rang in her ears. The sound of the gunshot that killed Gabriel".
Well after her boyfriend got killed the police interview her for hours - why? In the meantime her apartment is ransacked by the bad guys. Seems that Kaden and the police are equally inept.
Kaden is then contacted by a mystery man who, it turns out, is her long lost father. And, I forgot, she has an inherited deadly illness. And a very difficult childhood as a foster child. Did I forget anything? Oh, yes, here newly found half sister has been abducted to become a sex slave. I mean, some people really do not have an easy life.
Actually hosts of young nubile girls have been abducted in the US recently, at gun point, from school buses. But this event did not really result in much worry or action. Yes, some parents have formed a pressure group, but that is about it.
Ok, for whatever reason the group of her father decides on short notice to go to Zug in Switzerland, because that is where the bad guys meet, kind of an international conference of bad billionaire guys. Convenient - so Kadens group goes there too. I mean, why not. These international billionaire conferences always accept additional unknown guests at the last minute. Almost every billionaire there seems to have built his empire with arms and prostitution and sexual slavery. It seems that the modern errant billionaire does not have much imagination.
Kaden sees the guy who killed her boyfriend and tries to kill him by luring him out on a ski slope. He promptly comes. As it turns out, not only does he have a gun - Kaden seems to have forgotten hers - he is also the better skier. She jumps into a ravine, and, a few hours later and badly hurt, walks down to the next friendly locals. These do not call the police or ambulance, but it is for them obviously an every day event. Despite Kadens large electronic gear, none of her friends were able to locate her.
Next stop is a pleasure island in the Caribean, where the billionaire mastermind keeps the sex slave girls, has a kind of fantasy land for other billionaires and wants to inflict a horrible virus on the world. (this virus has already been inserted by his henchmen into the NYC water supply, therefore the need for the island is unclear. And btw., these henchmen insert the virus into an NYC water reservoir, which naturally has guards and fences. Why they not insert it further upstream into a river? But probably they like a good shootout just like you and me do).
Kaden and her team arrives on the island, where her half sister also is and all the other abducted girls. Kaden is caught three or four times by the bad guys (I lost count), which seems to be rather sloppy for a special ops woman. Each time the bad guys torture her. Despite having caught her and her group several times the bad guys do refrain from simply shooting them. I mean, letting a special ops team escape from captivity once might be a mistake, doing so twice seems negligent. (btw., the nubile girls also seem to have been unmolested. Nice for them, but do we really believe that all these sex gangsters of Eastern stock would really be so lenient?).
In the last torture scene Kaden manages something which might gain her the Noble price in chemistry. She is able to smell sulfuric acid, by its foul rotten egg scent. I would say: "F" in chemistry 101. So much for the "techno" part in this thriller. All the "technology" serves as a sidekick to an ineptly told action story.
Naturally all ends good, the bad guy dies a gruesome death, the abducted girls get psychotherapy (really!) and the reader is threatened with another installment of the series.
A few nuggets of the writing style: "Gabriel exploded out of the back entrance". (grisly to imagine.)
"For the last two months Gabriel was the reason the light returned to her eyes"
"She padded out of the room and across the barren wasteland of the next room". I am not sure what she padded, but a room is a room. The Sahara might be a barren wasteland, a room is merely empty.
    etc.
